FAQ
Questions, answered plainly.
Permits, payments, timelines and warranty. Can't find yours? Call us or ask in the estimate form.
Planning & estimates
Is the estimate really free?
Yes. The first visit and a written proposal are free and come with no obligation. Detailed design drawings for larger projects may be quoted separately — we'll tell you before any cost applies.
How accurate are the “from” prices?
They're starting points for straightforward work in a typical Halifax home. Your written proposal is based on your measurements, the condition we find, and the finishes you choose.
Are your prices before tax?
Yes. All prices on this site are in Canadian dollars before HST. In Nova Scotia HST is 14%, added on your invoice.
Which areas do you cover?
Halifax, Dartmouth, Bedford and surrounding communities in the Halifax Regional Municipality. Further out, ask us — it depends on the project size.
Permits & rules
Do I need a building permit?
It depends on the work. Structural changes, new bedrooms, decks, many basement projects and some plumbing work commonly need a permit. Requirements are set by the municipality and do change, so we check the current rules for your property before we quote and include permit preparation in the proposal.
Who applies for the permit?
We prepare the drawings and paperwork and can apply on your behalf with your authorization. Permit fees charged by the municipality are listed separately in your proposal.
What about older homes and hazardous materials?
Homes built before the 1990s may contain materials like asbestos or lead paint. If we suspect them, we stop, recommend testing, and bring in licensed abatement where needed before work continues.
During the work
Can we live at home during the renovation?
For most single-room projects, yes. We set up dust walls and floor protection and keep a working route through the house. Whole-home projects may need you to move out for part of the job.
How do payments work?
A deposit to book your start date, then progress payments tied to milestones listed in the contract. We never ask to be paid ahead of the work.
What happens if you find a surprise?
We stop, show you photos, explain the options and price the change in writing. Nothing extra is done without your signature.
Warranty & rebates
What does your warranty cover?
A two-year workmanship warranty from substantial completion, plus manufacturer warranties on products. Details are in the Process & warranty page and your contract.
Can you help with energy rebates?
Ask us about available rebates. Programs and eligibility change, so we'll point you to the current program information and organise our invoices and photos for your application. Approval is always up to the program.
Are you licensed and insured?
Ask us for our current insurance and registration details at your site visit — we provide certificates on request. Plumbing and electrical work is done by licensed trades.
